Synaesthesia scents

11 : 11 : 2015 Illuminum : Fragrance : Scent

London – Using scent to explore smell, colour and texture, fragrance brand Illuminum collaborated with artist Philippa Stanton to investigate the world of synaesthesia.

  • Inspired by the recent Illuminum London gallery installation Colour as a Narrative
  • Sensory stimulation can steer consumer behaviour

Synaesthesia, a neurological phenomenon, occurs through the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway, leading to a merging of the senses that allows sounds, tastes, smells and tactile feelings to be experienced in a range of textures, colours and shapes. Stanton realised she has the condition when she was a teenager and now uses it as the inspiration behind her art work, which evokes a vivid, emotional and personal impression of her combined sensory responses.

As part of the Illuminum workshop that Stanton hosted, guests were invited to create their own artwork by drawing inspiration from one of the brand’s fragrances using scent to explore smell, colour and texture.
