Sands of time: Pop-up counts down its existence

25 : 03 : 2014 Aesop : Pop Up : Life Tickers

New York – Australian skincare brand Aesop has opened up a pop-up shop in Brooklyn, and the centrepiece of the store is a giant sand installation that reflects on the temporary nature of the space.

The installation by Mexican architect Frida Escobedo is a timber-framed glass box that holds layers of sand. The sand – both white and black – was poured in between the glass layers to create a pattern that looks like a surreal mountain landscape. As time passes, the sand shifts slowly downwards and out of the box through a hole.

'This installation for Aesop reflects the passing of time in the way of an inverse sedimentation,' explains Escobedo in a statement displayed alongside the work.

While pop-ups are far from a rarity nowadays, it is interesting to see Aesop reflect on the temporariness of its own, which is open until July.
