The historical setting of the San Simpliciano cloisters provided the inspiration for the theme, as the rhythm of time is crucial to life in a monastery. Curator Henrik Vibskov asked each designer to interpret a specific time of day or timespan.

‘Some of the participants addressed the theme in the way a material patinates and changes in colour over time,’ he explains. ‘Others seized on the social element at a specific time of day, like the liberating afternoon coffee-and-cake break or the point at which night turns into day.’

Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard produced a series of mobiles called Rotations. A small rotating disc was lowered into liquid wax. Over the course of several days, layers of wax formed a larger disc that highlighted the amount of time required to create the piece. Christina Schou Christensen used her allocated time of 11:44:33–12:36:01 as a numerical ratio to mix three randomly selected ingredients for the glazes of her Lunch Recipes collection of ceramic pieces.

The Big Picture

Several designers including Yuri Suzuki and Lenka Vacková used the concept of time to inform their creative process at Milan Salone 2017. Keep an eye on our Shows section for more from the festival.
