Scent structures

18 : 03 : 2016 Paradise Paradoxe : Elodie Pong : Zurich

Zurich – The Paradise Paradoxe exhibition examines how perfume can be used to create non-verbal connections between people, places and objects.

  • Artist, sociologist and anthropologist Elodie Pong worked with fragrance chemist Roman Kaiser on a bespoke scent
  • Consumers are increasingly interested in the science of perfume

Designed by video and installation artist Elodie Pong, Paradise Paradoxe is an investigation into the invisible olfactory architecture of everyday life.

The exhibition, which features plants grown inside 3D printers and a robot that projects the names of established perfume brands onto a wall, comments on the increased use of synthetic scent compounds in the perfume industry. Several videos juxtapose elements of modern olfactory theory with images of a dancer.

Historically, the world of scent has been shrouded in secrecy, but consumers are increasingly interested in the ingredients and methods behind their favourite fragrances, as outlined in our Mix Masters microtrend.

The Big Picture

Perfumeries are opening up to enable consumers to learn more about their products. Lyn Harris’ Perfumer H concept store invites visitors to experience the making process at first hand.
