London – Behind the curious front of a new store is a worthwhile ghoul.
Set up by American writer Dave Eggers, Hoxton Street Monster Supplies: Purveyor of Quality Goods for Monsters of Every Kind is the first branch of Eggers’ 826 literacy project, which aims to help children learn to read, outside the US.
Kitted out by design agency We Made This, the store’s exterior and interior are designed to entice children into the store – and into reading. As well as claiming that the store was established in 1818, it suggests that it sells ‘Bespoke and Everyday Items for the Living, Dead and Undead’.
Items on sale inside include Tinned Fears, which include short stories by celebrated writers Nick Hornby and Zadie Smith.
Hoxton Street Monster Supplies is an excellent way to engage with some of the world’s most difficult consumers – children.
