Discretion has become the key to consumption for the French luxurian as the Socialist government takes ideological aim at the rich. ‘Things have changed greatly since the arrival of the Socialists,’ says Stan Roquette, managing director of Quintessentially in France. ‘Five or six years ago, the atmosphere in France was much more bling. Now that’s been transformed. People feel the new government is really targeting the rich. So people have become much more discreet about what they buy.’
