International – Sales of cosmetics products in high-end stores grew strongly in Argentina, Mexico and China in 2011, but the sector lagged behind in Europe.
In 2011, dollar sales of prestige beauty products grew by 33% in Argentina compared with the previous year, while sales rose by 15% in Mexico and 22% in China, according to a report by market research company NPD Group.
Prestige beauty sales grew by 11% and 9% in the US and the UK respectively, while sales in France and Italy were weaker, up by 3% and 1% respectively. In Spain sales fell by 1%.
Sales of prestige beauty products in US department stores increased, boosted by skincare and fragrances. Both categories had double-digit dollar growth in 2011 compared with 2010. Skincare sales increased by 14%, fragrances were up 11%, while make-up sales rose by 9%.
