Global – Instagram has launched Stories, a new feature that enables users to create and share photo and video content that is automatically deleted after 24 hours.
- Snapchat has overtaken Instagram as the app of choice among teenagers, according to Piper Jaffray
- Stories mimics several of the features that have made Snapchat so popular among members of Generation D
Its no secret that Snapchat got there first, but Instagram’s latest update is sure to ruffle a few feathers. Stories enables users to share their everyday experiences without having to worry about filters or messing up their carefully curated feed.
‘Stories enables you to share the moments of your day, not just the ones that you want to keep on your profile,’ the brand said in a statement. Influencers and brands can still collaborate with stylists, photographers and designers to achieve a more polished look.
Snapchat has changed the rules of social sharing and been widely praised for its unabashed honesty, playful filters, stickers, geofilters and ephemerality, which is a key driver behind its rapid uptake among members of Generation D who are keen to manage their digital legacy. The platform will soon surpass Twitter and Pinterest in terms of US-based users, reaching 58.6m users by the end of 2016, according to eMarketer. It remains to be seen if Instagram Stories will be as successful.
The Big Picture
Forget using Facebook or Twitter to connect with young consumers. Members of Gen Viz want ephemeral, visual-first platforms that use emojis, videos and animations to inject a sense of creative playfulness into the online experience.
