Muji announces plans to open a hotel in 2019

Tokyo – The hotel will be situated above a new flagship Muji store.

The store will be spread across the basement levels and the first six above-ground floors of the 10-storey building, with the hotel spread across the remaining floors. Each hotel room will be outfitted fitted with Muji furniture and products.

The hotel is set to open in 2019 on Namiki-dori street, which is famous for its high-end brands and located in Tokyo’s popular shopping district Ginza.

This new development comes at a time when brands from a range of sectors are expanding into hospitality to showcase their products. West Elm recently worked with hospitality group DKK to open five boutique hotels across the US that are fitted with West Elm products.

The new Muji complex taps into the consumer desire to see and experience products before committing to a purchase. A study by Retail Dive shows that 62% of consumers prefer shopping in physical stores rather than online so they can experience products first-hand before purchasing.
